Dodha Barfi - also known as Dhoda Barfi, or Doda Burfi - is one of India's most loved traditional sweets. It originated from the Punjab region and is best described as an Indian version of fudge, made with slow-cooked milk, pure desi ghee, mawa (khoya), sugar, and generous amounts of dry fruits.
What makes Dodha Barfi truly special is its texture: unlike smooth barfis such as Kaju Katli, Dodha Barfi has a distinctly grainy, slightly chewy bite that comes from the slow caramelization of mawa. The rich, deep brown color is a natural result of slow roasting - no artificial color added.
The Story of Dodha Barfi - Punjab's Century-Old Sweet
Dodha Barfi was born from a wrestler's ingenuity. Over a century ago in Punjab, a pehlwan (wrestler) named Harbans Vig refused to drink milk and ghee in their raw form -essential nutrients for his training. To make them more palatable, he slow-cooked milk, wheat, ghee, and sugar together until the mixture transformed into a dense, richly flavoured sweet. He called it Dodha -from the word for the milky liquid that rises when khoya is made.
Word spread quickly. The sweet became a staple of Punjabi households, mithai shops, and festive celebrations from Amritsar to Ludhiana. Over time, Dodha Barfi travelled south and west, arriving in Gujarat kitchens and sweet houses - including Maaakhan Bhog in Surat, where we have adapted this Punjabi classic while staying true to its original slow-cooked soul.
Today, Dodha Barfi remains one of India's most distinctively flavoured sweets - loved for its caramelized depth, its satisfying chew, and its ability to evoke the warmth of home and tradition in every bite

Taste & Texture- What Makes Dodha Barfi Special
Dodha Barfi occupies a flavour world entirely its own among Indian sweets. The texture is unlike anything else - simultaneously grainy and fudgy, with a satisfying chew that releases rich, caramelized milk sweetness on the palate. The slow-roasting of khoya develops a complex, nutty depth that plain milk barfi or kaju katli simply cannot match. The colour is a deep, warm brown - not from artificial colouring, but from natural Maillard reaction of milk solids and sugar over hours of gentle heat.
Each piece of Maaakhan Bhog Dodha Barfi has a slightly sticky exterior that gives way to a soft, dense interior studded with almonds, cashews, and coconut. The sweetness is balanced - neither cloying nor shy - with the fat from pure desi ghee providing a luxurious mouthfeel. This is not a mass-produced Dodha Barfi. Every batch is crafted fresh, in small quantities, to preserve that homemade richness.
Shelf Life & Storage
Best consumed within 12 days of manufacture (preservative-free, fresh made). Store in a cool, dry place (below 25°C) away from direct sunlight and moisture. Once opened, consume within 5–7 days. Refrigeration is acceptable for Dodha Barfi - unlike Soan Papdi, the fudgy texture survives cold storage. Our Dodha Barfi is sealed for freshness during transit. If refrigerated, bring to room temperature 15–20 minutes before eating for best texture and flavour.
